Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU): Community and Sports Center to rise soon downtown

The constructions at the Jacinto campus of Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) are at full force. The Php870 million project commenced last May, aiming to improve infrastructure and the sports facility program at their premises.

As soon as the Society of Jesus in Rome gave its permission, AdDU under the leadership of their president Fr. Joel E. Tabora S.J. started with the long project, which will be the the tallest educational building in Davao City when completed.

The community center of 12 levels and will be intended mainly to the faculty and staff of the university. According to reports, solar panels will be placed on the community center’s roof deck to power the lighting of the building and ceiling fans for the ventilation of the entire building. A communications tower will also be present on the building’s roof. 

The sports center and assembly hall, which will be built beside the community tower, will house eight levels and include athletic facilities including three basketball courts and locker rooms, with a plan of expansion to include two more courts and a fitness area for dance classes and the like.

The said center will rise on the corner of Roxas Avenue and Padre Zamora Street while the Sports Center and Assembly Hall will be located along Jacinto Street. The construction of the two buildings is to be completed within 18 to 24 months’ time, and expected to take face end of this year.

As of the moment (September), the buildings and areas facing Jacinto street were removed and cleared, to give way to the construction company that started erecting phase 1 of the 12-storey community facility.

B'laan tribe

The B'laan (also called Blaan, Bira-an, Baraan, Vilanes or Bilanes) are one of the tribes in Mindanao, and neighbors of the T'Boli tribe and live in Lake Sebu and in the southern part of Cotabato, Sarangani province, in General Santos. They can be also found in the northern part of Cotabato at the Buluan lake.

The tribe is known for their beautiful brassworks, beadworks and weave products which are called T'nalak.

This quiet folk wear impressive, colorful costumes that have traditional embroideries all over, going with it, accessories of fine materials are worn. Heavy brass belts with little tassels are worn by women, which gives them a melodic sound while walking. 

The B'laan call the mountainous areas their home and rarely going down to the shoreline or to the cities, unless there is a cultural event, like the Kadayawan festival.

Their way of living is simple by going fisihing, hunting in the forest, and harvesting crops like rice, corn, sugarcane, banana, papaya and other root crops.

In terms of religion, the B'laans are animistic in belief. They believe in Gods like Melu (creator of the universe), Lamot Ta Mangayo (God of war) or Diwata (God of harvest). Almos are female priestesses and have the power to communicate with spirits. Those called witches offer sacrifices to these Gods and spirits to avoid calamities and other evil influences. Almos occupy the highest rank of women in the tribe.

It is id that their name comes from "bla" that means "opponent" and the added suffix "an" could find it meaning from "people."

Over 100 students of Ateneo de Davao rushed to hospitals after eating lunch

More than 100 college students from the Ateneo de Davao University were rushed to various hospitals after having symptoms of food poisoning caused probably by spoiled adobo chicken during a leadership training yesterday, July 29.

The event, a leadership training summit, was attended by more than 300 participants including the university president, Fr. Joel E. Tabora SJ.

Two hours after taking lunch, students complained about dizziness and vomiting.

Student council president Maureen Villamor, who was among those rushed to a hospital, said to the newspaper Inquirer that she did not feel well after eating the chicken adobo. Her and other students noticed that that food prepared by caterer tasted spoiled.

According to Ateneo de Davao University's official student publication, Atenews, reported that 64 were admitted into the Davao Doctor Hospital, 43 in San Pedro Hospital and four in Davao Medical School Foundation.


Investigations are on going.
